Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
