Guitar Hero Turns 20 – How a Plastic Axe Connected Generations Among Rock Generations

Marking two decades after Guitar Hero hit the market in North America, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like rock legends. Not literally, but try telling that someone who's mastered the epic four-minute guitar solo before an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes moving along the screen synchronized to the music. Every sequence corresponded to specific notes, creating the sensation of an authentic performance.

Harmonix previously tried its hand with rhythm games before partnering with the publisher, later purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the foundations for a surprising massively profitable franchise that had a significant impact on numerous musicians featured, showcasing decades-old bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer of Harmonix, recalls the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games mostly used rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it was nearly impossible. We failed to secure acts such as legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were pretty convinced it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales and radio play increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “Among the amazing things was how many mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the songs they loved. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band the Answer included Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game revived older hits to the forefront: “The game offered a bigger, new demographic. Generally such music was seen as outdated material, but then once it got included in the game and teenagers were finding it, suddenly it was cool. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the outdated label. It provided all our music a new life.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album was still unreleased stateside, meaning Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the group as they went on a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Impact

Rock’s biggest acts soon took advantage of the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and associated stories, imagery and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the group more money than any of their records. It sold more than 500,000 units upon release, and demand for their songs rose significantly during an era when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates nimble-fingered fanaticism within the community. Recently, an online personality completed an impressive attempt of DragonForce’s Through the Fire and Flames – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay but an array of personalization features. This track is challenging even in the hardest setting, not to mention performed at increased tempo while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated it took nine months of practice.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to use a real gun and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

DragonForce previously completed a successful tour when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game proved so vast that it risked eclipsing all other the band has done. Last year, the track featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I felt differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has a unique path in music and I’m glad we’ve been part in fans' experiences”.

The Lasting Impact from the Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators believed there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

The majority installments were released over a mere five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles such as DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Games such as the fan project and newer releases have kept the community alive, with expectations of a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “There’s so much fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to continue for future fans.”
